Alexander Alekhine won many competitions of the highest rank, and yet his two victories stand apart. The tournaments in San Remo (1930) and Bled (1931) brought together almost all the strongest grandmasters of that time, and the 4th world champion seemed to appear “out of competition”. His separation from the closest pursuers was 3.5 and 5.5 points, respectively! “He is cracking down on us, like with the yellow-and-yellow chicks,” Nimtsovich sighed, stopping the clock after another defeat from Alekhine.
