THE VIENNA CHESS CLUB WAS FOUNDED IN 1857 AND HAD ITS FIRST MAJOR TOURNAMENT IN 1873 IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE VIENNA EXHIBITION. THE SYSTEM WAS THAT EACH PLAYER PLAYED A SMALL MATCH OF THREE GAMES WITH THE OTHER AND THE MATCH HAD TO BE FINISHED WITHIN 3 DAYS. BLACKBURNE LED UNTIL THE LAST ROUND, BUT LOST TO ROSENTHAL AND HAD TO PLAY A DECIDING MATCH WITH STEINITZ WHICH THE LATER WON 2-0. STEINITZ WAS FIRST AND BLACKBURNE TOOK SECOND PRIZE. THIS WAS THE FIRST OF MANY FAMOUS CHESS TOURNAMENTS SPONSERED BY THE VIENNA CHESS CLUB.
