Сергей Всеволодович остался в памяти шахматистов как человек на редкость приветливый, спокойный, умный, обладающий врожденным тактом и большой культурой. Он хотел написать популярный учебник для шахматистов-разрядников, тщательно отбирал для него материалы, однако работа осталась неоконченной: в 1942 году С.В. Белавенец погиб на фронте. Его дочь Людмила родилась за год до начала войны. Через всю жизнь она пронесла образ своего отца и во многом под его влиянием решила связать свою жизнь с шахматами. Она была чемпионкой Москвы и СССР, а наиболее крупных успехов добилась в игре по переписке: в 1990 году стала чемпионкой мира, в составе сборной СССР трижды побеждала на Олимпиадах.
