Igor Yanvarev "Tactical Mastery of a Chess Player. Volume 2. Basics of Calculation Techniques". Andrey Elkov Publishing House, Moscow, 2025 - 392 p. Before you is the second book from the three-volume work by International Master I.K. Yanvarev, a famous trainer, author of the fundamental work "The Old Indian Played by Tigran Petrosian" (2010), which received recognition from readers and was republished abroad. The three-volume work is united by a common idea - tactics and combinations in chess. In fact, this is a turnkey textbook, it explains everything from scratch to an advanced level. The second volume is devoted to the basics of calculation techniques, such topics as the tactical "spectrum" of a position, concentration of attention, inclusion of imagination are considered, the "tree of variations" is interpreted in a new way, the practical component is emphasized - the economy of calculation. A separate chapter allows the reader to assess their ability to calculate variations and outline ways to eliminate weaknesses. Each chapter ends with a large number of carefully selected examples for independent solution. Unlike other similar publications, the author examines chess tactics as a single whole, in combination with strategy and elements of psychology. It is based on the original author's methodology, which has proven itself well when working with chess players of various qualifications. Excellently selected examples, a clear logical structure and consistency in the presentation simplify the understanding of the material. For a wide range of chess fans.

International Master Tibor Karolyi and FIDE Master Tigran Gozalyan have prepared a major work (in two volumes) about the life and work of the 9th world chess champion Tigran Petrosyan (he held the title from 1963 to 1969).  Volume II (1963-1984) tells about Petrosyan's victory in the 1963 world title match over Mikhail Botvinnik, about the grandiose two-match confrontation with Boris Spassky in 1966 and 1969, about all his candidates' matches after losing the title – against Bobby Fischer, Viktor Korchnoi and other world-class opponents. All tournaments and matches of the second half of Petrosian's chess career are presented, up to his last performances in 1983. The authors subjected 175 complete games and fragments to an in-depth analysis (using modern computers). Not all of them have been deeply studied and commented on before, but even then the book provides a significantly improved analysis. Among Petrosyan’s opponents – world champions and contenders Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Spassky, Tal, Smyslov, Botvinnik, Korchnoi and Bronstein, as well as Timman, Larsen, Reshevsky, Belyavsky, Polugaevsky, Portisch, Romanishin and many others. Special attention is paid to his coaches – Alexey Suetin and Igor Zaitsev.

The idea of beauty in chess is closely connected with our understanding of chess as a wide sphere of human culture and art. Not only for brilliant strokes or bright combinational ideas we are impressed by formidable games played by outstanding masters: depth of logic in positional play, refined technique of exploiting an advantage, lelgant implementation of strategical ideas are no less attractive. A point of a chess combination attracts both an ordinary amateur and an experienced profy. The eventual possibility of sacrificial combinations is what makes ches so impressive. The major part of these 1640 games are annotated by ourselves. Garry Kasparov: «This book will undoubtedly find a special place among fundamental works on chess esthetics and beauty. It contains a great amount of awarded games – plenty of material for studies in all aspects of chess. The principle of the selection is very democratic – together with grandmaster games, there are many nice examples of play originating from games by amateurs. The enormous effort in systematization and analysis of games made by the authors deserves all respect and gratitude».

Nc6 in reply to either of White’s first moves – 1.e4 or 1..d4. The sequence 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5. 3.e5, leading to French-type positions, occurred back in the games of Arom Nimzowitsch and received the name of the Nimzowitsch Defence. Modern praxis has significantly extended the horizons of the 1…Nc6 opening, and it ca now lead to interesting strategic situations, the pawn structures of which are typical of the most varied opening systems: French Defence, Scandinavian Defence, Ruy Lopez, Scotch Game, Pirc-Ufimtsev Defence, King’s Indian Defence, English Opening, Queen’s Indian Defence and Nimzo-Indian Defence! Of the great masters form the past who made contributions to the development of the 1…Nc6 opening, we should mention in particular Aron Nimzowitsch and Efim Bogoljubow, and of modern players – grandmasters Bent Larsen and Anthon Miles. In our times, when the theory of the opening stages is rapidly developing, the 1…Nc6 opening may prove to be a successful find for players seeking new and unusual paths from the very first moves.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov: «This three-volume anthology contains the collected and annotated games of all the matches for the world chess championship between 1886 and 1998. In the overwhelming majority of cases, these matches were battles between genuine chess giants. In 1947 the organization of the world championships, including qualifying competitions, was taken on by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). This strengthened both the prestige of the title itself, and also the prestige of FIDE, which competently arranged these events for half a century. Among the games presented in this work are a number of genuine masterpieces, the study of which will afford great pleasure to lovers of the game. It can be confidently stated that this publication gives the most vivid impression of the state of chess skill and chess knowledge at various stages in the history of our game throughout the last hundred years. Such material cannot age and cannot be consigned to oblivion»

This volume of the anthology contains a number of collected and annotated games taken out of all the matches for the world chess championship between 1978 and 1998. The book covers the period of Karpov and Kasparov as the world title holders. Anatoly Karpov: «The third volume of this work contains games form several matches in which I have participated. I can say that every such match is a tough experience demanding a great expenditure of mental and physical effort. For the champion to be victorious, his purely chess skill, knowledge and memory are not always sufficient – these qualities are also possessed by his opponent, who has defeated his rivals in a succession of qualifying competitions. But even so, it is more often the existing champion who wins… This is why, until very recently, there had been very few of them – only thirteen. Now the chess world is witnessing the birth of a new system for conducting the world championship, in which it would seem that the element of luck will play a significant role. This has been explained by the increasing tempo of life, and by the need to make chess a more attractive spectacle for those who do not understand the deep meaning of chess moves. It will be a pity if future champions do not become genuine idols for those who value our wonderful game, to whom this absorbing book is addressed»

This book is a reprinted edition of the one, published in Riga, in 1938. The year of publishing is approximately 1992. The book is absolutely new but the quality of printing is not sharp.  Kemeri 1937 was a chess tournament held in the resort town Ķemeri, Latvia, at the Gulf of Riga from 16 June to 8 July 1937. There were three co-winners: Samuel Reshevsky, Salo Flohr and Vladimir Petrovs. Petrovs was one of the world's leading chess players in the late 1930s (e.g., the 8th Chess Olympiad at Buenos Aires 1939), but due to the political tragedies that befell the Baltic states in World War II, he became a victim of the Soviet oppression and perished in Kotlas (Russia) gulag in 1943. Alekhine and Keres tied for 4th through 5th. Endre Steiner from Hungary captured sole 6th with six points, followed by Saviely Tartakower Ruben Fine for 7th and 8th respectively.
