In 1940, fulfilled the norm for the title of candidate for the master of sports. Author of the book "The middle of the game of checkers" (Moscow: Physical Culture and Sports, 1954. - 307 p.). The debut in Russian drafts (the game of Shmulyan, first used in the RSFSR championship in Ryazan, 1949) and its variant (the victim of Shmulian — Markachev) is named after him. He developed the “system of Shmulian coefficients” adopted by the Russian drafts code and approved by FIDE in the modification for chess V. Ya. Dvorkovich. The Rostov Oblast Championship in rapid checkers in memory of T. L. Šmulyan was held on the occasion of its centenary, August 17–20, 2012
